Happy Sunday y’all!
Almost a year ago, I sent out my first newsletter on June 15th, 2020 to 18 subscribers who trusted me enough to give their emails. Today’s issue is going out to 166 readers which just astounds me. 166 friends and strangers who want to read what I have to say, learn and share. To y’all, I have to say a big thank you!♥
I am hitting another milestone. Cold Brew Money, my investing and finance podcast, hits 50 episodes tomorrow! The podcast has about 3500 downloads which is again surprising because we hardly market it (except for this newsletter!). When Atit and I started the podcast, we didn’t know what we were going to talk about but only knew we could use it as a platform to talk and learn about finance. There is still a stigma around money. A lot of young adults are still figuring out finances, just like us, and thought it will be a great way to learn. So, if you’re a listener, a big thank you!♥
Tracing back my journey in the past year, 2020 has been the most difficult and yet, one of my biggest growth years. I was unemployed for the most part of 2020, waiting for a visa, hospitalized, moved countries during a pandemic, and started a new job. A lot of things happened. But the turning point was the conversation below that happened in March 2020.
I had just started writing articles to develop my writing skills. And Atit Kothari (fondly known as sir and moving forward will be calling him Chellam sir) reached out to appreciate my website. We hadn’t been in touch before but used to do creative work in college together (if you want to check out our abysmal video). I said I will settle down first (initially was planning to move to London in April) and then will call. To that he said, “settle to hote rahenge” which means we will keep settling, so let’s get on a call.
I called him 30 mins after that, we talked about What the HAT!? and started that podcast with Hiloni the very next month. And from there we discussed the newsletter, CBM, and so on.
I was at a very low point at that time. My mental health had taken a tumble. And this was just the beginning of March 2020! After this conversation, India went in a lockdown and my visa got canceled. But this message started something big for me. I had something to work on while we were in the lockdown, while I was unemployed.
The blog, newsletter, podcast, and Instagram page had a huge role in keeping me sane.
And it was this small message. Pretty sure, Atit doesn’t know about this. To Atit, I have to say a big thank you!♥
But what was the point of this whole story? There is an underlying idea that I wanted to touch on.
Even the smallest message or gesture can have a huge impact on someone’s life, even if you don’t intend to. Butterfly effect.
If your friends create any sort of content or are starting something new and if you like what they create, reach out! It goes a long way.
There have been so many days when I feel like giving up and see a message from a friend who appreciates the work, keeps me going.
I literally have a folder on my phone of screenshots from friends and strangers who reached out to us to appreciate the work. The folder is called ‘Read this when you’re feeling low♥'.
So reach out. Tell them you love what they create. Share it. Tag them. Contribute, if you can. It goes a long way!
I know this newsletter has been quite ranty but finally, wanted to touch on 3 things that I learned from publishing online in over a year.
Three Major Lessons Learned From Publishing Content Online
People online are amazing. It’s never too late to start your tribe.
Just get started. Don’t overthink about success or failure.
Being consistent is difficult. Build strong systems.
Again, a big thank you to everyone!♥
The usual newsletter format will be back next week. Peace.
